Dr. Karlin is from a small town in Massachusetts, and she graduated from Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine in 2008. She had initially planned to be a large animal veterinarian, but then fell in love with cardiology during vet school. She practiced large animal ambulatory medicine for several years, but ultimately returned to Tufts in 2015 to do a cardiology residency. She has continued to work at Tufts as a faculty member since 2018.
