Jergens is a small animal internist at Iowa State University engaged in small animal gastroenterology. His clinical interests include GI endoscopy, diagnosis and treatment of canine/feline chronic enteropathies and role of the microbiome in GI health and disease.

He publishes regularly in both human and veterinary journals and is activiely involved in numerous canine and feline clinical trials.
