Description: Using case examples, this presentation will discuss tuberculous and non-tuberculous mycobacteria that cause systemic infections in dogs and cats, including new insights on their epidemiology, clinical presentations, diagnostic considerations, medical and surgical treatment approaches, and public health implications.
Learning Objectives:
1. Know how mycobacterial species infecting dogs and cats differ in their spatial distribution worldwide
2. Know what signs suggest the possibility of a mycobacterial infection
3. Know when specific handling precautions are needed to prevent zoonotic transmission, before a specific diagnosis is made
