Session
Description: This will be a conversational discussion on cutting edge approaches to diagnosis and treatment of endemic mycoses, including the expanding geographic distribution of these infections, how best to use new point-of-care tests for diagnosis, when culture and susceptibility testing is indicated, and how laboratory tests can be used to monitor the success of treatment. New approaches to antifungal drug use will also be discussed.
Learning Objectives:
1. Understand current and predicted spatial distribution of endemic mycoses, including cryptococcosis, sporotrichosis, coccidioidomycosis, blastomycosis, and histoplasmosis.
2. Know what new diagnostic tests are available and how to interpret positive and negative test results in an individual patient
3. Know the spectrum of antifungal drugs being used to treat these infections, and considerations for selection of one drug over another or use of combination therapy
4. Know how to monitor treatment efficacy and determine length of therapy
