Presentation Description / Summary: This session will review current state-of-the-art fluid therapy of the critical equine newborn and neonatal foal. It will include comparative aspects from human medicine. The session will review fluid type, rate and volume selection, fluid therapy targets, limits, as well as monitoring tools. It will include facets of physiology and clinical care.
Learner Outcomes: 1) Learn the types of fluids available for resuscitation fluid therapy in foals 2) Learn a protocol for determination of rate and volume of fluid administration in critical neonatal foals 3) Learn about monitoring tools to achieve fluid targets without exceeding fluid volume limits
Learning Objectives:
Develop a fluid plan for critically ill foals.
Select among various fluid types for treating hypovolemic foals
Define monitoring tools for navigating IV fluid therapy of the foal.
