Presentation Description / Summary: This presentation will provide an overview of Feline Herpesvirus-1 (FHV-1) infections in cats. We will discuss the therapeutic options available for managing FHV-1 infections, including topical antiviral agents such as idoxuridine, trifluridine, cidofovir, and vidarabine, as well as systemic agents like famciclovir and L-lysine. We will address the challenges associated with treating FHV-1 infections in both household and shelter settings, as well as the limitations of current antiviral therapies. We will also briefly explore therapeutic options for Parvoviruses, Canine Influenza Virus (CIV), Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV), and Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV).
Learning Objectives:
Identify the similarities and differences between antiviral and other anti-infective drugs.
Weigh the pros and cons of antiviral drugs used for different manifestations of common viral diseases of cats.
Determine which antiviral interventions can be justified for the therapy of FHV, CIV, Parvovirus, FIV, and FeLV.
