Presentation Description / Summary: There is plentiful information concerning the management of septic arthritis of the coffin joint in cattle. However, move more proximally and the scientific literature and in-depth resources dwindle for the management of sepsis in other synovial structures in ruminants. The overarching goal of this presentation is to review best practices and scientific evidence in the management of septic arthritis in cattle and small ruminants, both surgical, medical, as well as pain control. Case based discussions will be found throughout the presentation, as well as interactive polling and open discussions with those in attendance.
Learning Objectives:
Review of clinically relevant anatomy of ruminant synovial structures for performance of diagnostic imaging, arthrocentesis, and arthrotomy.
Discussion of current evidence-based recommendations for management of septic arthritis, including antibiotic pharmacokinetics, delivery options, and prognostication.
Discussion of pain management options in ruminant patients, in the context of both short and long term care of septic and (expected) degenerative joint disease cases.
