Presentation Description / Summary:: Urethral obstruction (UO) is a common and life-threatening emergency in feline practice and can quickly result in several complications, including hyperkalemia, azotemia, acidemia and uroabdomen. Common causes of UO in cats includes interstitial cystitis, urolithiasis and urethral plugs. Less commonly reported causes are urethral spasm/edema, strictures, and neoplasia. The purpose of evidence-based veterinary medicine (EBVM) is to improve patient care by providing clinicians with high-quality information and, more importantly, with the decision-making tools necessary to use it effectively, since the ultimate goal is better outcomes for patients. The key message of this presentation is how to use an evidence based approach to answer common questions involving management of cats with urethral obstruction. Topics about safety of cystocentesis, types of fluid therapy, how to predict and manage hyperkalemia and evidences on pharmacological management decreasing recurrence will be discussed.
Learner Outcomes: • Describe the spectrum of care (SOC) approach managing cats with urethral obstruction • Be able to identify the best possible choices in diagnosis, stabilization and management of urethral obstruction in cats
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, loparticipant will be able to describe the spectrum of care (SOC) approach managing cats with urethral obstruction
After presentation, participants will be able to identify the best possible choices in diagnosis, stabilization and management of urethral obstruction in cats
