Bovine colostrum is a cornerstone of early calf management, providing critical antibodies for passive immunity. However, its potential applications extend far beyond the initial feedings after birth. Emerging research suggests that colostrum supplementation beyond the first day of life may offer therapeutic and preventative benefits during key risk periods, such as disease outbreaks, weaning, and environmental stress.
This session will explore the non-traditional uses of bovine colostrum, focusing on its potential to enhance gut health, improve immunity, and support calves during high-stress phases. We will review evidence highlighting colostrum’s role in reducing the incidence of diseases like diarrhea and respiratory illness, mitigating inflammation, and promoting intestinal development. Specific attention will be given to studies examining extended feeding protocols, colostrum supplementation as a treatment during disease episodes, and its benefits during weaning.
