Presentation Description / Summary: Amlodipine is a common medication used in the management of systemic hypertension in dogs and cats. With overdose, clinical signs may be delayed and the severity of the exposure may not be recognized until severe signs of toxicosis are seen. These signs can be fatal. In this session, we will look at common and not-so-common clinical signs associated with amlodipine overdose noted in published research learn the mechanisms by which amlodipine causes these symptoms, and the impact they may have on case outcomes. Attendees will learn about appropriate treatment options available to manage these challenging cases.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, participants will be able to recognize the clinical signs of amlodipine toxicosis and the role toxicokinetics plays in the onset of signs and treatment.
Upon completion, participants will understand the mechanisms by which amlodipine causes signs.
Upon completion, participants will be able to describe appropriate nursing care and treatment for patients exposed to amlodipine.
