Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a genetic condition characterized by the formation of numerous fluid-filled cysts in the kidneys and occasionally the liver and pancreas. PKD is progressive, resulting in gradual loss of renal function and ultimately chronic renal failure. This session will discuss the use of renal replacement therapy and renal transplantation for treatment of end-stage renal failure secondary to PKD in a cat. 

Learning Objectives:

  • identify candidates for renal replacement therapy and renal transplanation
  • demonstrate veterinary technician utilization in administration of renal replacement therapy prescriptions
  • understand the role of the veterinary technician in regards to client education in renal transplant cases
