Presentation Description / Summary: How does cancer therapy actually work? The goal of cancer therapy is to eradicate cancer cells from the living body. This presentation will discuss the mechanisms by which chemical therapy, radiation therapy, and immunotherapy work to treat cancer. Included would be a review of cellular mechanisms leading to cell death, mechanism of action of the different treatments and how they kill cancer cells, resistance to cancer therapy, and why side effects occur.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, participant will be able to describe at least two different mechanisms of action of cytotoxic chemotherapy agents commonly used in animal patients and possible mechanisms of resistance.
Upon completion, participant will be able to summarize the mechanism of action of radiation therapy on a cellular level.
Upon completion, participant will be able to describe the mechanism of action of common forms of immunotherapy used to treat cancer, including vaccines and monoclonal antibodies.
