Presentation Description / Summary: Addressing the nutritional needs of sick foals is a key aspect of their recovery, regardless of the cause of the illness. When to feed, what to feed and how much to feed are all key questions to answer. This presentation will use cases to help illustrate how to identify foals who may require additional nutritional support, how to decide which route of administration is appropriate and how to calculate feeding requirements. Technical discussions will include placing indwelling feeding tubes, making total parenteral nutrition and monitoring of foals on a nutritional plan. Orphan foals present unique nutritional challenges. How to design a nutritional plan for orphan foals will be discussed, including what to use, how much to feed, how often to feed and how to transition onto a more 'solid' based diet.
Learner Outcomes: 1. The learner will understand the importance of early enteral nutrition even in foals with gastrointestinal disease 2. The learner will understand how to formulate a nutritional plan which may include enteral or parenteral nutrition and how to modify the plan according to the foal's condition. 3. The learner will understand how to design a nutritional plan for orphan foals including monitoring growth
