Presentation Description / Summary: Piroplasmosis is an infectious disease caused by the protozoan parasites Theileria equi and Babesia caballi. Parasite reproduction causes hemolysis and can result in severe disease of the host. While these parasites are endemic in many areas of the world, they are currently not common in the US and strict rules are in place to prevent spread of this disease. This lecture will review the epidemiology and pathophysiology of piroplasmosis in horses and discuss diagnosis and treatment options drawing from experiences on countries where piroplasmosis is endemic. Finally, the risks of piroplasmosis becoming more common in the US will be highlighted.
Learner Outcomes: Recognition of clinical signs of piroplasmosis in horses. Understanding of diagnostic tests appropriate for piroplasmosis. Assessing the potential risk for future spread of piroplasmosis.
Learning Objectives:
describe the clinical signs in horses with acute equine piroplasmosis.
understand the treatment options for horses with equine piroplasmos
recommend appropriate diagnostic testing for horses with equine piroplasmosis.
