Presentation Description / Summary: Leptospirosis was once a diagnosis that appeared far down on a veterinarian’s differential diagnosis list. As we encroach more and more on wildlife habitats, and share our gardens, streets, and trails with various wild species, we are seeing an increase in prevalence of this infectious disease. This presentation will review etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of this zoonotic infection. We will also discuss the use of personal protective equipment, and other ways to prevent both staff and clients from contracting leptospirosis from affected patients.
Learning Objectives:
Understand the rising prevalence of leptospirosis
Appreciate the zoonotic risk to veterinary healthcare team members when leptospirosis is on the differential diagnosis list, and implement methods to reduce that risk
Recognize the clinical signs that should put leptospirosis on the differential list
