Dr Smith received his DVM degree in 2009 from Ohio State. He worked in a mixed practice with offices in NW PA and NE OH from 2009-2012, where he also completed a MPS in biosecurity from Penn State. He then completed a residency in large animal internal medicine (livestock emphasis) at UC Davis from 2012-2015. After this he was a part time faculty member, graduate student, and pharmacology resident at Iowa State University from 2015-2020, completing a PhD in Biomedical Sciences (Pharmacology) in 2019. He is currently an assistant professor of farm animal medicine and veterinary clinical pharmacology at the University of Tennessee. His research interests include small ruminant pharmacokinetics, gastroprotectant pharmacology in large animals, as well as the pharmacology of analgesic drugs and antimicrobials in large animals. His research work in those areas has resulted in more than 90 scientific research papers as well as 10 book chapters, and he was recently recognized as the University of Tennessee’s recipient of the Zoetis Award for veterinary research excellence. He is a diplomate of the American College of Large Animal Internal Medicine as well as the American College of Veterinary Clinical Pharmacology.
