DVM Student
Colorado State University CVMBS
Originally from Puerto Rico, Jean Carlos (JC) Alvarado Colon moved to the United States in 2017 to pursue his academic and professional goals. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Florida, where he gained hands-on experience as a veterinary assistant and volunteered with several nonprofits, most notably a wildlife sanctuary. JC continued his education at Colorado State University, completing a Master’s in Biomedical Sciences before enrolling in the DVM program. He is now a second-year veterinary student.
Throughout his journey, JC has remained dedicated to increasing access to veterinary care. In 2025, he received the Chewy Veterinary Leadership Award in recognition of his efforts to support the veterinary community. JC partnered with CSU faculty and a local animal shelter to organize a Spanish-language vaccine clinic for underserved communities in Northern Colorado. In this event, veterinary students practiced their technical and communication skills to help pets and owners. This project continues to grow and addresses barriers to care.
JC is also an active volunteer with trap-neuter-vaccinate-return (TNVR) programs in Northern Colorado, working to improve the lives of feral and stray cats. His recent interest in feline research drives his goal of discovering innovative ways to help cats globally.
Through his diverse experiences, JC has demonstrated a commitment to making a positive impact on animals, communities, and the veterinary field.
