Alexander ‘Sasha’ Rabchevsky is a Professor of Physiology at the University of Kentucky and member of the SCoBIRC with research focused on mitigating both somatomotor and autonomic dysfunctions following spinal cord injury (SCI). After earning his Ph.D. from the University of Florida, he completed fellowships in Paris, France and Lexington, Kentucky before launching his independent research lab in 2000. Sasha pioneered the use of “mitoceuticals” for SCI neuroprotection and has directly transplanted exogenous mitochondria to restore cellular bioenergetics. Additionally, he discovered that gabapentinoid pain medications alleviate autonomic dysreflexia and spasticity, concomitantly. In contrast, direct nanopore sequencing was used to disprove the hypothesized link between 5HT2C receptor editing and uncontrolled muscle spasticity in spinal rodents.
