Nutrition discussions in clinical settings can be difficult and are often fraught with marketing messaging or outright misinformation. The growing pet food industry seems to have new companies, new products, and often new trends that become sticking points in conversations – particularly when nutritional management could benefit patient outcomes, but the ‘trend’ is in opposition. This session will discuss some current pet food industry trends from the perspective of industry formulation and provide some understanding as to how to approach the information in a clinical practice setting. Insights on pet industry trends such as ingredient inclusions or exclusions, preferences, as well as brief discussion of supplements will be provided from both an industry perspective as well as how these topics can be addressed within a clinical setting.
Learning Objectives:
Participants will be able to identify and evaluate some common pet industry trends and marketing claims regarding pet nutrition, distinguishing evidence-based practices from misinformation.
Attendees will learn strategies to engage in informed discussions with pet owners about nutritional choices, addressing trends and misconceptions and providing clear, science-backed recommendations.
