Presentation Description / Summary: This session will be a follow up to the fluid therapy presentation. It will review the human and equine veterinary literature on inotrope and vasopressor therapy, including sepsis therapeutic guidelines for humans. It will also review protocols for inotrope and vasopressor administration in newborn and neonatal foals, including physiology, indications, contraindications, doses, and monitoring.
Learner Outcomes: Learn about the physiology of inotrope and vasopressor therapy in newborn and neonatal foals. Learn the indications for use in foals. Learn comparative aspects from human medicine, and how to monitor their use in foals
Learning Objectives:
Define the physiological effects of vasoactive medication.
Select among inotrope and vasopressor medications for clinical use in foals with septic shock.
Develop a practical and physiological approach to inotrope and vasopressor therapy in critically ill foals.
