Presentation Description / Summary: This presentation will focus on new and novel areas in transfusion medicine. The lecture will review the most recent trends in human transfusion medicine to include the use of fresh and chilled whole blood, chilled platelets, the use of freeze-dried plasma and hemoglobin based oxygen carriers. The presentation will then discuss the use of many of these products in veterinary medicine including the hemostatic capacity of chilled canine whole blood, the research into canine freeze-dried plasma and hyperoncotic canine plasma. The author will point out the advantages and disadvantages of all of these products and outline the future potential application for these products.

Upon completion, participant will be able to understand the potential indications for each of the products how these products may be able to be used in both primary and referral settings
Upon completion, participant will be able to understand the advances in transfusion science in human medicine and how these advances may be translated to veterinary medicine.
