Canine Cardiac Tumors: Cardiologist vs. Oncologist Perspectives

Presentation Description / Summary: Canine cardiac and heart-based tumors (HBT) have historically been fatal diagnoses because of lack of early detection and effective treatments. This also creates both a unique challenge and opportunity in veterinary medicine that crosses the specialties of cardiology and oncology. The first part of this interactive lecture will provide a critical review of current literature and future directions. The second part of the lecture will include a tandem case-based approach to optimizing successful treatment and patient care. Focus will be on cardiologist’s perspective on detection, cardiac medical management, and monitoring as well as oncologist’s perspective on multi-modality treatment approaches including radiation & chemotherapy as well as potential for novel therapies.
