Diagnostic blood work and its proper interpretation are vital in diagnosing and managing sick patients, and the CBC holds a wealth of valuable insight into a patient's health and disease states. In this case-based talk, I will walk through detailed review of CBC reports, drawing attention to the clinical value of some of the lesser-known measurands (RDW, RHE, PCT, etc) you may have previously overlooked. Having a better understanding of these important nuances can provide essential diagnostic information needed for appropriate diagnosis and case management and have immediate impacts on how you practice medicine.
Learning Objectives:
Properly evaluate the erythrogram and various physiologic and pathologic changes that are identified in the RBC indices
Recognize inflammation beyond the leukogram numbers and understand its effect on reticulocyte hemoglobin
Properly investigate reported thrombocytopenia and have a better understanding of the reported platelet indices for further diagnostic information
