Presentation Description / Summary: Discuss 2 to 3 feeding studies in cats with CKD, where consumption of foods with supplemental betaine and fibers led to improvements in body composition and changes in the plasma metabolome that corresponded to better kidney health.
Learner Outcomes: 1. Be able to discuss microbiome modulation by nutritional interventions. 2. Explain how betaine and prebiotics work to benefit cats with CKD. 3. Be aware of relevant clinical trials (benefits/outcomes of consuming dietary fiber) in human CKD patients.
Learning Objectives:
Describe how betaine and prebiotics work to benefit cats with CKD.
Define the benefits of microbiome modulation by nutritional interventions.
Discuss the benefits/outcomes of consuming dietary fiber in human CKD patients in relevant clinical trials: delays onset of dialysis, reduces production of uremic toxins, reduces serum urea and creatinine, improves lipid profile and oxidative status, decreases systemic inflammatory status, and lowers mortality.
