The successful management of short bowel syndrome (SBS) is rooted in nutritional management. The goals of management include prevention of malnutrition, maintenance of ideal body weight and condition, accelerating intestinal adaptation, and controlling diarrhea. This lecture will review various nutritional strategies based on a complete nutritional assessment and characterization of the patient's SBS.

Recognize the general definition and diagnostic criteria for short bowel syndrome in dogs/cats
Identify key nutrients of concern with regards to the degree and location of intestinal resection and anastomosis
