Radiographic spinal scoring to improve spinal health in dachshunds has been used as a breeding managment tool for decades in Europe. More recently, a retrogene insertion (FGF4L2) has been shown to be associated with IVDD risk and short leg phenotype in dogs. What evidence is there to support the use of either of these tools in breeding managment of IVDD in dachshunds? Can we realistically breed away from disc disease risk in dachshunds? What happens to the short leg phenotype if breeders select against FGF4L2?
