Presentation Description / Summary: Refractory gastric disease is common in the horse, especially glandular gastric disease. The purpose of this lecture is to discuss a range of strategies used by the presenter to manage refractory gastric disease with a specific shift away from long-term pharmaceutical management towards targeted symptomatic management and behaviorally focused strategies. Strategies discussed include enhancing the timing of feeding and exercise, the evidence-based use of nutraceuticals, and the targeted use of appropriate pharmaceuticals. Managing learnt behavior and focusing on the clinical presentation as a pain-based disease is also discussed.
