OMICs Approaches for Precision Medicine Applications in Veterinary Science: Paradigm Shift or Flash in the Pan

Presentation Description / Summary: Precision medicine aims to personalize healthcare by understanding the interactions between genetics, environment, and lifestyle to improve disease prevention and treatment. Central to this approach is the use of "OMICs" profiling in humans and animals, which identifies molecular signatures and biomarkers, enhancing insights into disease mechanisms and leading to more effective strategies. Cardiovascular-Kidney-Metabolic Health represents interconnected metabolic risks, such as chronic kidney disease and cardiovascular diseases, increasing the risk of cardiovascular events. Proteomic technologies, like Olink’s Proximity Extension Assay (PEA), are crucial in identifying biomarkers and understanding molecular pathways, leading to more targeted therapies. For instance, studies like the Aldo-DHF and EMPEROR-Reduced trials employed PEA to identify and modulate biomarkers associated with heart failure, demonstrating its value in therapeutic evaluation. Similarly, metabolomic analyses provide real-time insights into cellular metabolism, helping to assess drug efficacy and safety by identifying metabolic alterations early in disease stages. These approaches, particularly in the context of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, facilitate the development of personalized treatments and improve clinical outcomes. Our consortium recently studied the effects of various cardiovascular drugs, including angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists (MRA), and sodium-glucose transporter 2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors on dogs. This session will highlight the potential value of an OMICS approach for identifying novel biomarkers involved in the pathophysiology of cardiorenal and metabolic diseases in dogs, and how they can support the development of new innovative therapeutic drugs in veterinary medicine.
