The Intersection of Endocrinology and Oncology: Diagnosis and Treatment

This session will focus on the diagnosis and treatment of endocrine disorders that are caused by neoplasia. Discussion will include the pathophysiology and treatment of hypercalcemia including Cinacalcet; treatment of cancer using steroids in diabetic patients, including SGLT2i’s; and managing insulinoma, including the use of toceranib. The session will also include a discussion of diagnosing thyroid disorders and Cushing’s in patients who are ill and/or have cancer.

Learning Objectives:

  • To understand the common causes and treatment of paraneoplastic hypercalcemia, including treatment with cinacalcet for hyperparathyroidism.
  • To understand the complications of treating patients with diabetes with steroids and the use of SGLT2i's.
  • To understand the management of Insulinoma, including the use of toceranib.
  • To determine obstacles to diagnosing thyroid disorders and Cushings in patients with cancer.
