The body allows for adjustments regarding access to and/or processing of nutrients during critical care situations. As practitioners, we need to understand how to support these adjustments to help optimize patient treatment/management during critical illness or trauma scenarios. This program can guide both general and specialty practices, without a nutrition specialist, to confidently, safely and appropriately put together a nutrition support plan for their critical patients. The presentation will review basic concepts of nutrient metabolism during illness/trauma; outline the common consequences of malnutrition of the critical patient; and provide practical guidelines regarding diet and feeding approaches for nutritional support to critical patients to hasten recovery, optimize overall treatment/management, and improve patient quality of life.
Learning Objectives:
Describe how nutrient utilization differs during a critical care scenario as compared to how nutrients are utilized by healthy canine and feline patients.
List diet and diet delivery options that best target the specific nutrient needs of your critical patients based on common presenting conditions and comorbidities.
Develop comprehensive, user-friendly nutrition support (feeding) plans for your critical patients both while hospitalized and during at home recovery.
