This presentation plans to discuss disease recognition, diagnosis, treatment and prevention measures taken by the herd-level veterinarian during bovine respiratory disease outbreaks on New England dairy farms (Salmonella dublin, Mannheimia hemolytica). It will also explore avenues of communication and consultation with secondary and tertiary care providers to establish a more robust farm response plan as well as high value individual care. Challenges and techniques specific to field medicine will also be reviewed.
Learning Objectives:
Distinguish the challenges for an on-farm, field level response to dairy cattle respiratory disease outbreaks from individualized animal care plans and consultation.
Discuss the importance and implementation of appropriate biosecurity measures for bovine respiratory disease outbreaks at the dairy farm level.
Evaluate possible avenues of cooperation and consultation between field bovine practitioners and referral level professionals for dairy respiratory disease outbreaks.
