For many years in the Unites States, desexing pre-pubertal male and female dogs has been commonplace. Over the past decade this dogma has been challenged in the veterinary community. This session will review the current scientific literature regarding the age to spay-neuter dogs and the impact that has on musculoskeletal health and risk of developing neoplasia.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, participant will be able to define the onset of puberty in male and female dogs as well as sex steroid hormone signaling pathways in the peripubertal dog.
Upon completion, participant will be able to describe the risk and benefit of pre-pubertal versus post-pubertal gonadectomy in male and female dogs.
Upon completion, participant will be able to conduct an evidence based approach to gonadectomy recommendations in male and female dogs.
