Presentation Description / Summary: Antimicrobials are the cornerstone of medicine and veterinary medicine; they are critical in infection treatment of millions of humans and animals worldwide. Resistant organisms that spread through people, animals, food and the environment are a major public health threat. Resistant microbes can spread through our shared environment, affecting the health of all. AMR is truly a One Health issue and a key element of environmental, social and governance (ESG) of veterinary organisations. But how do we successfully implement proven strategies to improve antimicrobial stewardship in everyday veterinary practice? How does this differ in a larger institution; can we ensure sustained behaviour change in antimicrobial stewardship at an organisation level? What works? How do we fund these changes? This lecture highlights key findings from an evidence synthesis of antimicrobial stewardship interventions in veterinary medicine - emphasising proven strategies to help innovate antimicrobial stewardship policies. Crucially, this lecture will also show how to fund these innovations so that they are feasible and obtainable in all types of workplace and organisation.
Learning Objectives:
Understand the importance of antimicrobial resistance from a One Health global point of view.
Develop an understanding of the proven strategies for antimicrobial stewardship change in practice.
Apply behavior change theory to ensure successful and sustained implementation of antimicrobial stewardship policies and support.
