Presentation Description / Summary: This session will explore how team-based learning (TBL) can be used effectively in teaching internal medicine to veterinary students and can have a profound impact on both educators and learners. It will emphasize how TBL helps students transition from pre-clinical knowledge to clinical application, fostering deeper understanding and readiness for practice. Using a recently re-designed 3VM selective course as a case example, we will explore the common challenges veterinary students face when moving from pre-clinical to clinical learning, particularly in complex subjects like internal medicine and how TBL can serve as a bridge between theory and practice by promoting active learning, critical thinking, and collaborative problem-solving. Through this self-paced, mock TBL session, we will also see how TBL can improve student engagement, understanding, and confidence in internal medicine topics. We will also share actionable strategies for integrating TBL into veterinary curricula, particularly in internal medicine related sessions.
Learner Outcomes: 1) Participants will be able to analyze the impact of team-based learning (TBL) on veterinary students' comprehension of internal medicine, particularly in bridging the gap between pre-clinical knowledge and clinical application. 2) Participants will be equipped with specific strategies and approaches for integrating TBL into their own courses, as well as being able to identify and address potential challenges in implementing TBL in their educational settings.
